AMMAN - The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will hold a seminar on the “Introduction of new Generic Top-Level Domains” on October 14, 2008, at the Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Business Forum/ Talal Abu Ghazaleh College of Business (TAG-College) headquarters.
Introducing new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) is central to fostering choice and competition in domain registration services, and as such is significant to the promotion of ICANN's core values.
At the same time, expanding the gTLDs space will inevitably create a new window for businesses to innovate and may as well lead to new trends in the domain name industry.
The next generation of gTLDs may no longer need to serve specific industries such as .aero, .mobi, .travel, etc., nor is it essential that they represent certain communities like .asia, and .cat.
Over the past three years, the ICANN community has been working on developing the policy process for introducing new generic top level gTLDs.
The Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) has initiated a policy development process in December 2005 through which a wide range of technical, operational, legal and policy aspects have been addressed, and a wide-range of feedback and public comments have been received.
