Abu-Ghazaleh to Chair International Conference on Wireless Internet
25 Jun 2003Convening tomorrow at the UN headquarters in New York is the Conference on the Wireless Internet Opportunity for Developing Nations, held under the chairmanship of Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, Vice-Chair of the United Nations Information and Communication Technologies Task Force (UN ICT TF).
Abu-Ghazaleh will deliver the opening speech and then deliver a speech on behalf of the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
The conference is being organized by the Wireless Internet Institute (W2i) in collaboration with the UN.
Wireless internet known as Wi-Fi means using the internet without the need to connect the computer to a phone line. This helps developing nations in overcoming the communications gap due to the unavailability of a telecommunications infrastructure.
It is expected that this technology will represent a historical shift in the world of information and knowledge similar in significance to the mobile phone. This technology will achieve inexpensive electronic communication through the internet utilizing Arab radio waves (i.e. broadband). The prime beneficiary of this telecommunications revolution will be developing nations, poverty-stricken and rural areas.
Abu-Ghazaleh stated that he will present a preliminary comprehensive plan to direct this new technology-based revolution in order to serve developing countries and in order to bridge the digital gap throughout the world, by the creation of a partnership between the governmental and private sectors.
