Touqan Confirms Partnership between Public and Private Sectors in Entering the Data Era

AMMAN – The Minister of Education, Dr. Khaled Touqan, emphasized the importance of a true partnership between the public and private sectors in entering the data era and executing the program of the ‘electronic government’ which is being supervised by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.
 
In a speech delivered at a graduation ceremony for public and private sector employees yesterday who trained on the usage of computer skills at the Abu-Ghazaleh Center, he said: “The initiative of the Abu-Ghazaleh Center for the training and qualification of teachers aims at increasing the computing efficiency and skill that they have.”
 
The program –which 250 employees participated in and which lasted 8 weeks- aims to eliminate internet illiteracy and evaluate the ability of the trainee on using information technology, raising efficiency and eliminating the psychological barrier to using the computer.
 
Touqan alluded to the significance of IT centers in helping acquire the necessary expertise in the field of information, and advancing responsibilities towards civil society.
 
He said: “Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization (TAGorg) has launched a project to train 500 teachers from the Ministry of Education on computer usage, which helps enhance the ministry’s ability to use the computer as an educational tool and implement all basic skills related to it at various stages of the educational process.”
 
The head of the ‘electronic government’ program at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Mr. Mahmoud Khasawneh, displayed the phases of the program’s preparation and the challenges facing its execution. He elaborated that during phases 1 and 2 of the project since its beginning in August 2002, 2300 employees were trained on using basic computer skills. He said that the program aims to train 20 thousand governmental employees by the end of 2005, and connect 22 ministries and organizations to the secure electronic government network by the end of next year.
 
The Vice-Chair of the UN ICT Task Force, Mr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh said: “The electronic government program is a comprehensive project that contributes to the creation of a new generation that is adept with the skills of knowledge transformation and computer skills, in order to provide electronic services to citizens at an advanced level.”
 

He pointed to the advancement of the public sector over the private one in the realm of changing local society to a knowledge society and bridging the digital divide, while praising the efforts of the Ministry of Education in this transformation through training at various educational levels.
