During a Seminar Convened at the University of Jordan with Local and Regional Participation: Experts Discuss Contemporary Issues in the Field of Trademarks and their Problems
01 Feb 2005AMMAN – The Seminar of Contemporary Issues in the Field of Trademarks began yesterday at the University of Jordan. It is being organized by the Arab Society for Intellectual Property (ASIP) and the Center for Services and Technical Consultations of the University of Jordan, and enjoying widespread participation at the local, Arab and global levels.
The convention of this seminar in Jordan is occurring due to the significance of the issue of intellectual property (IP) in the world of information and technology, as some currently developing topics are being raised, which have appeared in trademarks law and registration. These developing topics appeared even prior to usage of colors as a mark, unfair competition and the Madrid system, which Jordan incidentally will be executing soon with the rest of the world.
The first day of the seminar had a number of related topics competing for the participants’ attention. One of these was a general overview presented by Dr. Kanan Alahmar, who is a member of the board of directors of the Arab Intellectual Property Mediation and Arbitration Society (AIPMAS) and a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property. Another document on protecting trademarks at both the civil and criminal levels was presented by Mr. Hazem Alsmadi, who is an Amman court judge, Head of the Development Dept. at the Ministry of Justice and staff member at ASIP. The presentation was followed with a discussion.
A third paper dealt with the issue of trademarks and business names. It was presented by Mr. Charles Shaban, the Executive Director of Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP), while Dr. Alahmar presented a working document on non-traditional trademarks and famous trademarks as well.
Dr. Abdullah Khashroum, member of the Managers Committee at ASIP and President of the Arab Society for Teaching, talked about trademarks, which was followed by a presentation on trademarks forgery presented by Mr. Alsmadi.
The last presentations on the first day focused on unfair competition by Mr. Khashroum, and the changing of licensing and exemption by Dr. Alahmar.
The seminar today discusses 6 papers related to IP.
