First IP Moot Court Concludes its Sessions

30 May 2005
AMMAN - The Arab Society for Intellectual Property (ASIP) organized the final hearing of the Intellectual Property Moot Court Contest on May 30 at the University of Jordan (UJ) – Faculty of Law.
The contest is a joint project organized by ASIP and the university to provide law students with the opportunity to apply their studies to different IP cases that are proposed by the society.
The five-member panel was presided by Judge Thaer Al Odwan, from the Jordanian Ministry of Justice; hundreds of students attended the final hearing in the case which related to an infringement on a trademark owned by a well-known company.
“This [the moot court] is one of the most successful practices that I ever attended in the field of law. From my experience in courts, this practice will positively affect law students in the future,” the judge said.
Awards for the winning teams will be distributed by Chairman of ASIP, Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, at the Le Royal Hotel in Amman, June 11.
“The contest is one of the pioneer experiments to be carried out in the field of IP in our region,” Hazem Kherfan, the winner of the contest told ag-IP-news.
The announcement for those willing to take part in the contest was made last March; 31 teams participated, each composed of one to four law students from the university.
Officials at ASIP said that they are working to make this contest an annual event where much attention to IP protection will be generated.
