AMMAN - The Asia Pacific Top Level Domain Association (APTLD) Board and members meetings, organized by Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization and the National Information Technology Center (NITC), started on Sunday at the Amman Marriott Hotel.
The event was held under the Patronage of Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Nadia Al Saeed. In her opening speech, she said that Jordan has played an important role in the development of information technology in the region.
"Jordan is considered one of the best countries that is adopting the latest technologies in developing one important sector and that is education," she stated.
"The education sector in the Kingdom has passed through several stages dealing with the information technology and now we believe that a teacher is not the only source for education and knowledge and students should learn and discover by themselves," she added.
Al Saeed pointed out that Jordan will always be a member in the APTLD.
Currently, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates are the only members in the APTLD.
Meanwhile, TAGO Executive Director Mustafa Nasereddin, said "Knowledge is the catalyst for development and prosperity and TAGO is proud of the fact that the first meeting of the APTLD is being held here."
"Jordan is an excellent example of a country that adopted all available means to take its information technology and communication sectors into another level," he added.
"Out of our economic and social responsibility in the region, TAGO has adopted a logical approach to this vital sector, which indeed proved to be an essential ingredient to the recipe of any country's crucial development," he pointed out.
The two-day event will bring together country-code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) managers from across the Asia Pacific Region who will meet and discuss issues of concern. Jordan was chosen as the venue for this meeting to allow for easy participation by Middle East and West Asian ccTLD managers.
APTLD is the organization for ccTLD registries in the Asia Pacific region, which extends to the borders of Europe in the West. The main objectives of this association are to promote skill development and information exchange among members; to provide a forum to discuss policy matters affecting Internet domain names; and to be a useful interface between ccTLD managers and international Internet coordination bodies.
The second day of the venue will be a meeting of the APTLD Board and Members, to plan the Association’s activities and work program for 2006.
