JIMS & AGIP Sign a Memorandum of Understanding for More Effective Trademark Protection

AMMAN - A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Sunday between the Jordanian Institution for Standards and Metrology (JISM) and Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP) at the Institution’s headquarters in Amman.
The Memorandum aims at enhancing and developing methods and mechanisms formulated to protect consumers and prevent commercial fraud.
Dr.Yasin Khayat, JISM general director and Luay Abu-Ghazaleh, AGIP Vice-President deputizing for AGIP Chairman Talal Abu-Ghazaleh signed the Memorandum.
Khayat said that the MoU is a reflection of the fruitful cooperation between the public and private sectors in combating fake products.
"The spread of counterfeited products in the Jordanian market is an important issue jeopardizing the safety and health of our citizens," he said.
"Every day we receive several cases of fake products especially appliances entering the Jordanian market and our role is to protect citizens against fraud and spread the awareness all over the Kingdom," he pointed out.
Luay Abu-Ghazaleh stated that the spread of the fake products is becoming like a plague. "There are huge stock of fake auto spare parts and medicine that, without any doubt, are exposing people to danger and our role is to protect citizens and show them that buying fake products is dangerous," he said.
"We are happy with the cooperation with the Jordanian Institution for Standards and Metrology concerning this vital issue and we are sure that citizens will feel the effect of this cooperation soon," he noted.
According to a press release by AGIP, this cooperation will lead to creating the appropriate climate for investment in the Kingdom, it will also upgrade services provided to AGIP clients through protecting their rights as trademark owners and banning the entry of products that infringe on the original and registered trademarks in the country.
The MoU stipulates the need to set up a mechanism through which AGIP will provide the Institution with a special database of AGIP trademark proprietors so that both parties coordinate their efforts to prevent the spread of products which infringe on these trademarks and violate Standards and Metrology Law.
In addition, AGIP will establish a bureau for intellectual property at the
Institution, which will offer special consultancy on all IP fields to enhance the quality of services provided by JISM.
AGIP will also hold special training courses and workshops for the Institution’s employees providing them with information and promoting awareness concerning intellectual property protection issues.
