AMMAN - The Jordanian Institution for Standards and Metrology (JISM) General Director Dr. Yasin Khayat said on Sunday that the institution will soon open a special unit dedicated exclusively to deal with intellectual property infringement cases.
"This is a serious matter which we should deal with in the right way as we all know the importance of intellectual property rights protection," Khayat told ag-IP-news Agency.
"The unit will protect the rights of Jordanian citizens and work on producing positive results concerning this vital issue," he added.
According to Khayat, there are many cases of fake products that are
endangering the life of normal citizens.
"Recently, we have discovered a house in Amman which was put in danger due to the use of a fake iron of a famous brand but luckily no one was hurt," he said.
"The iron is made of an unreliable material which was burnt after few hours of use by the housewife and this could have made a major disaster," he pointed out.
Meanwhile, JISM will be moving to a new 20,000 square meters building to accommodate all its activities.
"The new state-of- the-art building will be finished at the end of 2006 and will be equipped with the latest technologies and communications," he said.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Sunday between JISM and Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP) at the Institution’s headquarters in Amman. The Memorandum aims at enhancing and developing methods and mechanisms formulated to protect consumers and to prevent commercial fraud.
