“High percentages of companies in the various countries will be interested in registering their domain names with .mobi,” Sha'ban added.

There are several technical requirements for registration, for instance, the .mobi domain name must have three characters: may only contain the English language letters and numbers from 0 through 9 and the domain name may include hyphens but not at the end or at the beginning of the domain name.

Meanwhile, TAGIdomains Manager Mahmoud Lattouf said that it is an excellent move forward.

“.mobi ensures that services developed around the .mobi are optimized for use by mobile devices; therefore, the introduction of such specialized domain name will regulate the Internet and facilitate the search for restaurants, maps and news,” Lattouf commented.

The .mobi registry mTLD is appointed by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Ericsson, Google, Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung Electronics, and T-Mobile are among the investors in mTLD.
