Graduation ceremony of ITA Digital Literacy Students Held
30 Dec 2007MUSCAT — The graduation ceremony of trainees under Information Technology Authority ITA’s government Digital Literacy training pilot project was held at Grand Hyatt yesterday under the patronage of Mohammed bin Nasser Al Khusaibi, secretary-general of the Ministry of National Economy and chairman of ITA. Also present at the ceremony was Dr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, chairman of Talal Abu-Ghazaleh organisation.
Al Khusaibi presented certificates to the trainees who graduated with basic IT literacy skills in the Cambridge and IC3 training programmes. The training programmes were offered in association with Abu-Ghazaleh Cambridge Information Technology Skills Centre (AGCA) and Certiport.
The pilot project was launched in early January this year, for selected employees of the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources. Each participating ministry had nominated about 100 employees to take part in Digital Literacy training and they were trained at three locations: Muscat, Nizwa and Sohar. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Salim Al Ruzaiqui, CEO of ITA, said: “The importance of the project is high as the results of this pilot project will help us identify the best way forward in the implementation of the national IT training on a much larger scale.
“The success of this project has been achieved through the assistance and commitment from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Civil Services, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources and the two training providers,” he added.
The GITT is a pilot project under the National IT Training and Awareness Framework Initiative (NITTA), which is a government, nationwide e-Oman initiative aimed at developing ICT skills and increasing ICT awareness within the government and the community. The GITT initiative aims to provide ICT training opportunities to civil service employees, to enable them to offer electronic services to the public and other businesses. This time, the trainees comprised a mix of both male and female civil service employees with varying levels of IT literacy, ranging from beginners and intermediates, to experts. The training was offered with the cooperation of the Ministry of Education, utilizing trained teachers and school computer labs. Abu-Ghazaleh Cambridge Information Technology Skills Centre (AGCA) was established as a result of an agreement that was signed in June 2001, between Talal Abu-Ghazaleh International (TAGI) and Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), to deliver Arabic IT training courses.
