The United States has long taken pride in its peaceful transfer of power; a hallmark of genuine democracy. However, the events surrounding the 2020 elections—during which former President Donald Trump refused to concede defeat—have raised pressing questions about what may transpire if he loses again in 2024. Will we experience a resurgence of chaos and uncertainty akin to the previous elections, or could the situation deteriorate into street violence if his supporters reject the election results?

What is concerning is that this scenario has evolved from a distant conspiracy theory into a pressing reality. Political divisions have reached unprecedented levels in modern history, fueled by misinformation and echo chambers on social media, in addition to growing distrust in the electoral system among many Americans. Upholding the will of the people is not just a legal obligation; it is also a moral imperative. One of the major concerns in light of the current political climate is the issue of gun laws, which presents a troubling scenario. U.S. law allows every citizen to carry firearms, and estimates indicate that around 70 million armed individuals are affiliated with Donald Trump's party. This statistic is particularly concerning, as the possibility of violence following the elections—regardless of the outcome—creates anxiety among many Americans and around the world.

Ultimately, the strength of American democracy will be assessed not only by the number of votes cast or the efficiency of its counting systems but also by the nation’s ability to rise above its divisions and maintain the values that have established it as a global model of democracy.
