EBITT Meeting

28 Jan 2003
Mr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, Chair of the ICC Commission on E-Business, Information and Telecom (EBITT) and Chairman of Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization (TAGO) chaired the last Commission's meeting that took place last week in Paris.
Among the projects discussed for the year 2003 to be undertaken by the Commission are the formulation of the world business positions on the impact of key international regulatory initiatives on information technologies, telecoms policy, data protection, consumer policy issues in e-commerce, technical management of the Internet, cybersecurity including cybercrime, harmonization of e-contracting rules, jurisdiction and applicable laws issues and media in the online context; the development of the ICC input into the Doha Round of WTO trade negotiations on telecoms and e-business issues; provide ICC members with toolkits - such as on information and network security and on privacy- to promote, implement, and disseminate ICC policy; lead business expertise for international initiatives aimed at promoting information and communications technologies as a tool for economic development and at creating digital opportunities (e.g. UN World Summit on the Information Society, WSIS); and the development of ICC's e-Business Universe- an umbrella for the transformation of ICC Standards to online services that will become ICC's focal point for online B2B transaction products from other divisions and commissions of ICC.

Some of the points to be discussed during Mr. Abu-Ghazaleh's meeting with the WTO Secretary General is the role EBITT could be assigned to play within the WSIS Summit's agenda, especially on "The Needs of the User theme".

It is worth noting that EBITT's mandate is to promote the development of electronic business and the integration of information and communication technologies through policies, standards of practice, and guidelines that encourage competition, growth, and the secure flow of information.
