ASIP Reviews Steps to Implement Granting IP Expert Certificate

28 Apr 2003
BEIRUT - Under the patronage of Mr. Ghazi Alaridi, the Minister of Culture in Lebanon, the Arab Society for Intellectual Property (ASIP) will convene its annual meeting in Beirut on April 28, 2003, presided by Mr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, Chairman of ASIP.

The meeting includes reviewing the accomplishments of ASIP and discussing a workplan for the years 2003-2005, in addition to assessing financial and administrative reports. It also includes laying the foundation for executing the Arab Certified Intellectual Property Practitioner (ACIPP) program, where a mechanism will be adopted for the training stages and sitting for a qualifying exam. This takes place after the society translated the study curriculum into Arabic in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

This is considered the first qualification of its kind in the Arab region, as it will enhance the quality and number of practitioners in the field of intellectual property (IP). A project initiated by the society to compile the rulings of Arab courts on all cases related to IP and publishing these on the internet in one volume will also be reviewed.

As a sidebar to the meeting, an agreement will be signed with the renowned Lebanese publishing house ‘Sader’ to market the society’s publications such as the Abu-Ghazaleh IP Dictionary and others.

Other items on the agenda will be the annual report from the Board of Directors for 2002, discussion of the general budget for 2002 and the estimated budget for 2003, in addition to other administrative affairs.

ASIP was established in 1987 with the goal of enhancing awareness related to IP in Arab communities, and assisting in the preparation and development of related IP laws and legislation throughout the Arab world.
