Minister of Education Graduates 250 Trainees in Computer Skills
03 Jul 2003AMMAN - The Minister of Education, Dr. Khaled Touqan, yesterday graduated 250 trainees in computer skills from the Abu-Ghazaleh Cambridge IT Skills Center (AGCAITC), with the attendance of Mr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, Chairman of the Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization (TAGorg) and Vice-Chair of the UN ICT Task Force and the representative of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology Mr. Mahmoud Khasawneh, head of the electronic government project.
In his speech, Dr. Touqan said that introducing computers into schools on the one hand, and training state employees on the other, collectively represent one of the most important prerequisites for Jordan to enter the world of information technology. He added that advancing with the proper technical levels will allow Jordan to enter into global partnerships in the future.
The minister pointed to the active role of the private sector, valuing the role of AGCAITC in this field, especially since this center’s work provides a model of true partnership between the private and public sectors.
On his part, Mr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh emphasized the active role of the private sector in the area of training state employees with computer skills in order to fulfill the objective of an ‘electronic government’.
He also said that the private sector in the advanced nations of the world lies ahead of the public sector, yet in Jordan the opposite is true, with the exception of some private institutions. Therefore, focusing on training government employees and private companies will support progress in this field to reach the level of developed countries.
Mr. Abu-Ghazaleh added that the AGCAITC obtained a training license from the University of Cambridge for the Spanish language. This license is valid for all Spanish-speaking countries, and so Cambridge assigned the center to begin this training which it actually did from its location in Jordan.
The program executed by the center will be presented at the World Summit on the Information Society convening in Geneva next December, to assess its training successes.
Abu-Ghazaleh affirmed that the aim of the center is that knowledge reaches all sectors of society, and that the maximum number of citizens can use the internet.
Mr. Mahmoud Khasawneh thanked TAGorg for its support of the electronic government project and reiterated the importance of transforming the challenges before this project into opportunities.
