Election of Talal Abu-Ghazaleh as Vice-Chair of the United Nations Information and Communication Technologies Task Force (UN ICT TF)

GAZA –Special to the Al-Quds correspondent – The fifth meeting for the United Nations Information and Communication Technologies Task Force (UN ICT TF) was convened at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) headquarters in Geneva. The main topic was education and the role of IT.
 
The third session for the preparatory committee for the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) focused on the contribution of the UN ICT TF in fulfilling the UN developmental purposes during the third millennium.
 
The participants reviewed the challenges and available opportunities before the WSIS and its organizers. Also, the UN ICT TF reviewed how realistic previous attempts were in investments relating to IT and telecommunications and how to effectively develop investment in this field in the future.
 
A large part of the sessions were dedicated to the role of IT and telecommunications in growth programs.
 
Mr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, chairman of the Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization, discussed the issue of electronic education in terms of it being a key in fulfilling UN development objectives during the third millennium. He called for a comprehensive strategy for electronic education.
 
The UN ICT TF concluded with defining strategies and methods to ensure the effective participation of the private sector and civil society in the preparatory stages of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS).
 
Further, Talal Abu-Ghazaleh was unanimously elected for the third time as Vice-Chair of the UN ICT TF, in addition to him being a member of the taskforce’s executive office.
Also, the ex-President of Costa Rica and special representative of the UN Secretary-General, Jose Maria Figueres, was elected as the taskforce chairman for the third consecutive time.
 

It is noted that the UN ICT TF works toward unifying the efforts of government representatives, academics, businesspeople and NGO leaders under one banner with the purposes of bridging the gap between those who possess information and those who don’t.
