World Summit receives internet governance proposal
A proposal to create an internet governance forum balancing the interests of governments, civil society, and business was delivered to the first phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in December in Geneva. Delivered by Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, who is Vice-Chair of the United Nations Information and Communication Technologies Task Force, the proposal recommends that:
According to Abu-Ghazaleh, “We need to continue to internationalize the internet, to maintain it as the only world information society network.” The proposal recommends that these issues be explored under the umbrella of the United Nations Information and Communication Technologies Task Force.

The IEC, ISO, and the ITU are encouraging the WSIS to take into account in its deliberations and in its final document the need to include international standards and the role they play as an essential part of the technological foundation for the Information Society. The internet is seen as an integral part of the Information Society.
