14 Jan 2004Founder and CEO of SYNTAX, the leading Amman-based multidisciplinary design, media, and technology consultancy to participate in the Summit’s session on Youth, Education, and Technology; the summit is to take place 17-18 January at the Hotel InterContinental Berlin, Germany
Prominent political leaders and social innovators from the Arab World, Europe, and the USA will meet at the first Arab Western Summit of Skills (AWS), to be held in Berlin, Germany from 17-18 January 2004. The Summit aims to contribute to building and strengthening civil society structures in the Middle East, by drawing together Arab professionals and educationalists and providing a platform for them to interact with policy makers in governments and NGOs on some of the Arab World’s most challenging developmental issues. The event is sponsored by the foreign ministries of the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom and is organized by Brandicate Consultants and the Amr Group.
“30% to 50% of the populations of many Arab countries are under 15 years old, representing enormous potential in terms of creativity, productivity, and future entrepreneurship,” according to Ahmed Humeid, founder and CEO of SYNTAX, the leading Amman based multidisciplinary design, media, and technology consultancy who is participating in the Summit. “Technology, the media, and the Internet continue to present today’s youth with tremendous options, lifestyle choices, and cultural influences than ever before. In parallel with this, there is enormous opportunity for policy makers to use these same means to educate, empower, and ensure better communications with tomorrow’s leaders.”
Humeid will be joining the AWS’s working group on Youth, Education, and Technology to examine educational policies and structures needed for success in a globalized, technology dominated world. Also participating in the working group are Lizzie Range, the Head of the Mircosoft Corporation Learning Program for the Middle East and Africa and Hady Amr, of the Amr Group and Director of World Links Arab Region. The ‘Youth, Education, and Technology’ session takes place on day one of the AWS, which will also have separate working groups for ‘Good Governance and Social and Civic Development’, ‘Healthy Populations’, ‘Growing the Economy’ and ‘Societal Structures’.
“Considering the scale of the opportunity in the media and technology sectors, there are still relatively few successful new ventures established,” said Humeid. “The challenge for many countries is establishing and driving the right educational policies and structures needed to encourage success in a globalized, high-tech society: creating an environment where more Arab entrepreneurs can succeed. Any contribution towards this goal is valuable.”
Humeid started his first design studio in 1991 while still studying architecture at the University of Jordan. Over the last 13 years he was involved in various pioneering publishing, creative, and technology ventures in the Middle East, where he assumed leading positions in design, branding, user experience, information technology, and Internet consulting. Humeid’s Amman based company, SYNTAX, advises companies, governmental, non-governmental, and international organizations on branding, communication, and technology.
“The AWS is a first of its kind meeting of professional Arab and Western individuals and institutions dedicated to promoting civic and economic infrastructure development in the Arab world,” said Humeid.
The list of speakers attending the Berlin Summit includes William J. Burns, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, US Department of State, Volker Stanzel, Director General for Political Affairs, Mideast and Asia, German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Josef Joffe, Co-Publisher and Editor, Die Zeit, Akram Baker, Chairman, Brandicate Consultants, Tariq Ramadan, Author of “To be a Muslim in Europe” and Professor of Philosophy, Geneva, Tarek Al-Wazir, Head of the Bündnis 90/DIE GRÜNEN Parliamentary Group in the Hesse State Parliament, Talal Abu Ghazaleh, CEO, TAGI Group, Hady Amr, Amr Group & Director of World Links Arab Region.
Humeid has spoken at a number of regional and international conferences on the subjects of design, architecture, media and the Internet. He is a regular contributing writer in the Arab media on issues of design and technology.
