IP Conference Tackles ‘Industrial Property and Business Management’

CAIRO - The “Industrial Property System for Actively Promoting Innovation in the Arab Region” Conference continued its sessions today for the second consecutive day at Cairo Grand Hyatt Hotel.
The Conference is jointly organized by the European Patent Office (EPO), the Academy for Scientific Research and Technology of Egypt (ASRT) and supported by Talal Abu-Ghazaleh International (TAGI).
At the opening session, Head of the Intellectual Property Asset Management in Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Al Ansari presented the participants with an informative review of the innovation system of Saudi Aramco, which is a fully international petroleum company with the world's largest oil reserves that manages over than one quarter of the global total.
“Innovations are generating substantial value to the Company mainly through our employees’ creative ideas which are highly recognized by the management,” Al Ansari told the participants.
He reiterated that new programs, which greatly recognize creative and new ideas and give rewards in return have been established in 2001.
“Around 15,000 ideas have been submitted since the start of the new programs, around 7 per cent of them have been approved, while the rest are currently being discussed,” he added.
Al Ansari pointed out that some of the approved ideas did save Aramco millions of dollars.
Meanwhile, Executive Manager at Talal Abu-Ghazaleh International (TAGI), Mustafa Nassereddin declared the establishment of “ag-IP-news Agency”, the only specialized intellectual property news agency.
This Agency, which will be launched officially July 1, 2004 was formed, according to Nassereddin to be an efficient tool to spread awareness and cover IP news and events.
“It will be an effective tool through its various functionalities and strategy to target all IP issues and what adds to its uniqueness is that it is a free service,” he said.
One of the papers discussed the IP recognition, protection and exploitation in the pharmaceutical sector in Jordan, which was presented by Director-General System House for IP Services Dr Mohammed Saleem.
Other IP issues like patent and trademark information products; how to negotiate licensing and WIPO’s innovation promotion programs and tools were also tackled by the participants who represent IP offices, governments, IP stakeholders and NGOs from Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan in addition to the Gulf Cooperation Countries are taking part in the event.
