Multilingualization of Domain Names is Only A Matter of Time-Lattouf
15 Jun 2004AMMAN - Around 79 percent of Internet users support the idea of the multilingualization of domain names over the Internet, while only 8 percent said they don’t, and around 14 percent said they have no idea, according to a recent poll by ag-IP-news Agency.
Domain Name Registration Officer at Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property Mahmoud Lattouf said that this is predictable.
“ It is something expected and it shows the high interest in spreading the Arabic language in this field which has been controlled by English so far,” he said.
He added that the idea would positively bridge the digital divide and create another world for millions and millions of individuals living in this region.
And concerning whether it will be confusing to write a domain name in Arabic for example, Lattouf said that it will be confusing at the beginning but as anything else it takes time to get used to it.
For sometime now, talk concerning the multilingualization of domain names has taken the stage and several parties have adopted the initiative to study the cons and pros of having this system operational.
“I believe that Arab countries should come together with a plan and present it to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and this is right time to do it,” he said.
