IP Forum to be Launched in Jordan

23 Nov 2005
AMMAN - Extensive efforts are being carried out to establish an Intellectual Property Forum in Jordan gathering government and non-government parties concerned with IP protection in the Kingdom.

The idea was initiated by the Royal Scientific Society (RSS) and Princess Sumaya University for Technology (PSUT) to regroup all efforts dedicated for promoting IP awareness.

“We noticed that all efforts that are made in the country to protect and promote awareness concerning IP are taken individually,” Taghreed Breezat, IP Office manager at the RSS told ag-IP-news Agency.

Invitations were sent to government entities such as the Jordanian Institution for Standards and Metrology (JISM), the Industrial Protection Department at the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the National Library and others, in addition to non-government societies, companies and agents mainly Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP), and Jordan Intellectual Property Association (JIPA).

“All expressed their willingness to cooperate in the Forum and we believe that this will be a significant step to take,” Breezat added. She noted that a meeting that gather all the concerned parties will take place on November 29 to discuss the nature of this Forum, its legal status, and the mechanism to
activate it.

From another side, Breezat revealed that the RSS is in the final stages of concluding an IP policy. “The IP Policy defines the relation between the institution and its employed researchers. In case the researcher invented a device, a formula, or a program, this policy would clearly explain intellectual property rights for each party morally and financially,” she said.
Breezat pointed out that such IP policies are acknowledged worldwide noting that the RSS is the first to adopt it in the region.
