20 Jun 2006
NEW YORK - Chair of the International Chamber of Commerce's (ICC) Commission on E-Business, IT and Telecoms, Mr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh will serve as a co-chair of the Global Alliance for Information and Communication Technologies and Development's (GAID) Steering Committee.
Headed by Chairman of the Board of Intel Corporation Mr. Craig Barrett, the Steering Committee, which provides the Alliance with executive oversight and guidance, is composed of several co-chairs representing major constituencies including government, business, media, civil society and international organizations.

GAID is a new initiative launched by the United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan to promote effective use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for development. It aims to facilitate and promote the integration of ICTs into development activities by providing a platform for an open, inclusive, multi-stakeholder cross-sectoral policy dialogue on the role of ICTs in development. It will thus contribute to linking the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) with the broader UN development agenda.
The inaugural meeting of the GAID was held June 19-20, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where Mr. Abu-Ghazaleh delivered the opening session's statement on behalf of the Business Community.
Creating a Cyber Development Corporation, establishing resource centers to boost human capital, and setting up business networks and working groups to promote outreach and partnership were some of the suggested proposals discussed during the event.
