Jordan Customs Department Launches IP Division
22 Nov 2006AMMAN - Jordan Customs Department has opened a new specialized division to follow up on Intellectual Property (IP) issues in the Kingdom, according to Intellectual Property Division’s Director Yusri Al-Muhtadi.
Speaking to ag-IP-news Agency on Tuesday, Al-Muhtadi said that the new division is currently operational and open to public inquiries.
“The new section aims at following up the issues related to IP and implementing laws associated with this field,” Al-Muhtadi said.
"The team will work on finding new methods to identify infringement on Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) and establishing a computerized section to facilitate checking documents related to IPRs," he added.
"In addition, the team will try to enhance the coordination between the new Division and the Ministry of Trade and Industry and Jordan Institute for Standards and Metrology," he pointed out.
Al-Muhtadi said that the new division will have all the assistance and support of the various sections of the Customs Department.
To enhance its efforts in protecting IPRs and at the same time strengthen its ties with the private sector working for the same goal, the Customs Department and Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP) signed last year a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aims at building up cooperation between the two parties to enhance their efforts in protecting IPRs.
The main objective which the MoU stressed on is the need to develop the efficiency of its departments towards enforcing legislations related to protecting IPRs and dealing with unfair trade in Jordan, and to upgrade the services rendered by AGIP to its clients in respect of enforcing and protecting their rights as the owners of legally registered trademarks against the entry of goods violating the law into the Kingdom and infringing their rights.
