AMMAN - In a pioneering step to enhance strategic cooperation between the private sector and the scientific and research domain, Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP) and the Royal Scientific Society (RSS) signed the first of its kind Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the field of Intellectual Property (IP) on Thursday at the Society’s headquarters in Amman.
The signing ceremony was attended by HRH Princess Sumaya bint Al Hassan, head of the Princess Sumaya University for Technology (PSUT) and AGIP Chairman and CEO Talal Abu-Ghazaleh in addition to high ranking officials and seniors from both parties.
HRH Princess Sumaya considered this agreement a step forward in recognizing the importance of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs).
“This agreement is one of the mechanisms to bridge the gap between the academia and the technological community,” she noted at the signing ceremony.
Princess Sumaya thanked AGIP for its significant efforts in making the Second Innovation Promotion and Technology Commercialization Conference, held last November, a big success as well as in believing in the mission of the RSS.
The MoU paves the way for coordination between the two institutes particularly in the field of IP training and consultation. Under the terms of the Memorandum, AGIP provides IP consultancy for the Society in all aspects related to this field; patent and trademark registration services, the international protection for all Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) related to the Society or any of its inventors.
Abu-Ghazaleh called for the establishment of an Arab commission which will help innovators in turning their inventions into successful producing projects.
“I have discussed the establishment of this project with the World Intellectual Property Organization General Director Dr. Kamil Idris and we at the Arab Society for Intellectual Property are willing to provide all the required assistance,” he said adding that “we need a well-recognized entity like the RSS to lead such a project that will upgrade creativity and boost national economies.”
In the field of IP training, the agreement entails that AGIP conducts training courses and workshops to upgrade the technical and legal knowledge of the Society’s staff in this field.
AGIP’s Vice-Chairman Luay Abu-Ghazaleh and RSS’s Vice-Chairman Khaled Khaleh signed the agreement.
Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property provides an extensive range of Intellectual Property services from over 60 offices and through over 180 correspondents worldwide.
The Royal Scientific Society was established in the 1970s as an independent, not-for-profit non-governmental organization (NGO), and is mainly engaged in scientific and technology R&D, consultation, training and various support services. RSS is an independent entity with its own Board of Trustees, which is chaired by his Royal Highness Prince El Hassan bin Talal.
