AMMAN - The Third Intellectual Property Moot Court Competition, organized by the Arab Society for Intellectual Property (ASIP) and the University of Jordan (UJ), concluded on Thursday at the Faculty of Law.
UJ President Abderahim A. Hunaiti, officials from the Ministry of Industry and Law, in addition to ASIP members and University students attended the event which aimed at providing law students with the opportunity to apply their studies to different IP cases that are proposed by the Society.
The two competing finalist teams debated on a copyright infringement case; more specifically an infringement on software program. The winners were Rasha Al-Kilani, Mona Saleh, Abeer Mostafah.
Chief Judge of the First Instant Court Judge Nihad Al-Husban, who presided over the panel, told ag-IP-news Agency that this [the moot court] is one of the most successful practices that she ever attended in the field of law.
"From my experience in courts, this practice will positively affect law students in the future. We would like to very much thank Mr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh for his great effort in supporting such events,” Al-Husban said.
She added that this is the “third year to organize the first of its kind court, which proves that the private sector is working towards helping university students more and more in order to understand IP as well as to create a real-time experience in a court case,” she added.
The three-member wining team received JD600 plus a four-month training at the Abu-Ghazaleh Legal company under the umbrella of Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization (TAGorg).
“We had a very successful event this year thanks to the University of Jordan, ASIP and Mr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh who donated the awards. Raising awareness is a significant step to help the fight against counterfeiting and piracy," Dr. Basem Melhem, professor of Commercial Law, Jordan University noted. "This event supported this objective,” Melhem stated.
In September of 2004, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between ASIP and the University to organize the Simulated Intellectual Property Tribunal, also known as a Moot Court competition, on IP topics among law students at the Jordanian universities.
The Saul Lefkowitz Moot Court Competition was established in 1990 by the Brand Names Education Foundation in honor of Saul Lefkowitz, a chairman of the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board of the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
