AMMAN - The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in cooperation with the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) will hold a student seminar on “Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs)” on June 13, 2007 at the Talal Abu-Ghazaleh College of Business (TAGCB) / German-Jordanian University.

TAGCB and the Arab Society for Intellectual Property (ASIP) will be hosting the event at their premises in Amman.

Joseph Rodriquez from the USPTO will be tackling several IP issues.

During the event, a presentation of books from the “Intellectual Property and You” series composed by Dr. Amir H. Khoury and published by the USPTO will be presented. These books are: Essentials of Intellectual Property – a basic primer for every one; and The Use and Protection of Intellectual Property – A guide for Arab professionals.

Khoury, the researcher and author of this series, specializes in intellectual property law. He is a well-recognized academic author, having written numerous articles on intellectual property (IP) issues in the Middle East and the US, and a frequent speaker at international conferences and seminar dealing with IP protection and enforcement.

In an introduction to the books, ASIP Chairman Talal Abu-Ghazaleh highlights intellectual property as "a domain where our national interests as Arabs coincide with those of the Western World. The encouragement of creativity and innovation, which IP is all about, will not only fuel development in our region, but will also inspire confidence in our economies throughout the world and promote foreign investment in local industries. The fact that this publication is bilingual in a way symbolizes this pleasant prospect in my own perspective."

He continues "IP is much more than the phrase conveys in the literal or business sense.  That is of course an important aspect and I have always believed in the great potential of our man and women in our science and technology.  But IP protection is also essential to us as artists, musicians, writers, designers, filmmakers, performers, small business owner and inventor."

"The publication of this guide by the USPTO is a sign that the Arab world still has a great deal to contribute to the world business community. Dr. Khoury’s work is a great contribution to the field. He has taken a complex subject and made it accessible to all. I am also convinced that this publication will be useful to many in our profession," Abu-Ghazaleh concluded.
