Facebook Specialist Speaks at Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Knowledge Forum

Ms. Elizabeth Linder gave a briefing on how to better understand Facebook's technology, identify how Facebook fits in to the global demand for more transparency and openness in the public sector, and examine societal trends that profoundly influence the ways in which the public interacts with its leaders

AMMAN----March 25, 2013----- Ms. Elizabeth Linder, Facebook's Politics & Government Specialist for the Europe, Middle East & Africa region tackled intersection of Facebook and 21st-century governance at a special seminar held at Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Knowledge Forum.

Ms. Linder who delivered her third lecture for the day highlighted the role of social media especially Facebook in creating a social trend that covers various aspects in the society around the world.

She also gave a briefing on how to better understand Facebook's technology, identify how Facebook fits in to the global demand for more transparency and openness in the public sector, and examine societal trends that profoundly influence the ways in which the public interacts with its leaders.

She stated how Facebook managed to enable people worldwide to connect and share news, photos and views with a simple click: "As information becomes more available ... searching for that information also gets better."

Facebook says it had 584 million active users each day on average and 604 million using Facebook from a mobile device each month. Facebook members grew from 1 million at the end of 2004 to 1.01 billion in September 2012.

"As we can see Facebook was able to be a powerful tool to bring people together to share almost everything," she said.

The event was attended by a host of IT and social network experts.

A California native, Ms. Linder joined Facebook from the company's headquarters in 2008. Prior to Facebook, she specialized in US politics and education at YouTube as part of Google's Global Communications & Public Affairs team. A French and Italian major who wrote her thesis on the nineteenth-century metropolis, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Princeton University. She currently resides in London.
